NURS 3100 WEEK 5: ISSUES / TRENDS IN NURSING DISCUSSION & ASSIGNMENT
WEEK 5: AT A GLANCE
INTERPROFESSIONAL TEAMWORK: CIVIL COLLABORATION FOR THE COMMON GOOD
INTRODUCTION
It takes a team to deliver quality patient care! The foundation of an effective interprofessional healthcare team is one that practices shared accountability among team members, effective communication, and patient advocacy (Reiner, 2020). Research demonstrates that interprofessional (IP) practice improves care, safety, and patient outcomes.
Teamwork is not always intuitive. Nurses, physicians, nutritionists, psychologists, and other health professionals can suffer from a “professional nearsightedness” of sorts and go their own direction, working more in isolation. For obvious reasons, conflict may occur when professionals come together, because they bring their own unique viewpoints and backgrounds.
As a nurse leader, you will learn to embrace and expect conflict. You may find that your role on the team will be to promote respectful and positive relations among professionals for your organization to deliver the best patient care possible. Establish a culture among your colleagues and the various professions they represent to embrace IP collaboration—patients are counting on YOU!
Week 5: Interprofessional Teamwork: Civil Collaboration for the Common Good: In this week, you will analyze two examples of communication and the differences between them. You will also analyze academic integrity tutorials and reflect on how you might avoid plagiarism. | |

NURS 3100 WEEK 5 DISCUSSION LEADING CIVILITY IN THE WORKPLACE
Civility does not just happen naturally. People from various backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives are expected to work together in high-stress and high-stakes work environments. It takes conscious willingness from everyone to engage in genuine discourse to seek common ground for the best outcome, which in our case means delivering high-quality, safe patient care.
Treating one another with respect is requisite to communicating effectively, building community, and creating high-functioning teams. Civility involves truly listening and understanding others’ points of view. Who doesn’t want that? GO TEAM!
