DESCRIPTION: March 21, 2010, was not EBP’s date of birth, but it may be the date the approach “grew up” and left home to take on the world.

When the Affordable Care Act was passed, it came with a requirement of empirical evidence. Research on EBP increased significantly. Application of EBP spread to allied health professions, education, healthcare technology, and more. Health organizations began to adopt and promote EBP.

In this Discussion, you will consider this adoption. You will examine healthcare organization websites and analyze to what extent these organizations use EBP.

• Explore the website to determine where and to what extent EBP is evident.

Describe where, if at all, EBP appears (e.g., the mission, vision, philosophy, and/or goals of the healthcare organization, or in other locations on the website). Then, explain whether this healthcare organization’s work is grounded in EBP and why or why not. Finally, explain whether the information you discovered on the healthcare organization’s website has changed your perception of the healthcare organization. Be specific and provide examples.

Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice?

The healthcare organization website I have reviewed is the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. AHRQ is a federal agency within the United States Department of Health and Human Services tasked with improving the quality and safety of America’s healthcare system.  Evidence Base Practice (EBP) appears in the mission of the AHRQ.  The mission of AHRQ is to produce evidence to make healthcare affordable, equitable, higher quality, more accessible, and safer with the United States Department of Health and Human Services and with other associates to ensure that evidence is understood and utilized(AHRQ, 2022).

The work of AHRQ is grounded on EBP.  Fiordalisi et al. (2019) posit that AHQR is devoted to building bridges between research and evidence along with working with health systems to enable them to implement research into practice by disseminating and implementing evidence. Also, AHQR is devoted to speeding up the dissemination of best practices based on evidence across learning systems and to assisting health systems to become learning systems. For example, The AHRQ established the Evidence-Based  Practice Center (program)  in 1997 to help learning health systems to better translate high-quality evidence into practice. Borsky et al. (2019), emphasize that the recognition that numerous healthcare systems continue facing challenges in implementing and disseminating evidence into practice, the AHRQ  program embarked on initiatives to aid the translation of evidence into practice and also to monitor and measure how changes in practice impact health outcomes.

The information I discovered on the AHRQ website changed my perception of the healthcare organization. At first, I thought AHRQ is a regulatory authority that sets standards for scientific research. I have understood that   AHR is devoted to EBP and its core competencies are health systems research, data and analytics, and practice improvement.  Brach and Borsky (2020) indicate that AHQR is not a payer for health care nor is it a regulatory authority but the agency endeavors to improve patients’ lives through practice improvement, s health services research, and data analytics.  The work of AHRQ targets health systems and clinics to assist them to possess the best evidence along with tools for improving care delivery.

The health care organization website reviewed is the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (AANA) website. The website includes a profession practice division that provides evidence-based resources to support nurse anesthesiologists in their practice. In addition, it presents the Professional Practice Manual for the Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) published by the organization to include standards for nurse anesthesia practice, scope of practice, code of ethics, practice and policy considerations, and code of ethics (American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology, 2022a).

Describe where, if at all, EBP appears (e.g., the mission, vision, philosophy, and/or goals of the healthcare organization, or in other locations on the website).

The website includes an online page in which the organization presents its position statement on EBP in CRNA practice. The organization reiterates that it puts evidence to practice by recognizing the importance of EBP, and establishes a systematic evidence-based process for analyzing and resolving issue of importance to nursing profession and practice. It identifies three key components of EBP as: patient preferences/values, clinical expertise, and best research evidence. In addition, it identifies five steps of EBP: asking a clinical question, obtaining best research literature, critically appraising the evidence, integrate evidence with clinical expertise and patient preferences, and evaluate outcomes of decisions (American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology, 2022b).

Explain whether this healthcare organization’s work is grounded in EBP and why or why not.

AANA work is grounded in EBP. That is because it has a website page that highlights the importance of EBP in nursing practice, as well as how to achieve EBP. It acknowledges the need to adopt EBP, and the need for resources to be availed that put evidence to practice. The organization supports these efforts by presenting and verifying evidence that is put into practice (American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology, 2022b).

Explain whether the information you discovered on the healthcare organization’s website has changed your perception of the healthcare organization.

The information discovered in the website did not change my perception of the organization. That is because I am aware that EBP is increasingly being adopted, and forward thinking organizations are taking on a leading position in supporting EBP. Organizations have significant resources that they can use to support nurses in implementing EBP to include guidelines and training materials (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019).
