Brief analysis of connection between EBP and Quadruple Aim

There is a close link between EBP and Quadruple Aim as they both focus on improving patient experiences, population health and work life of healthcare providers through improving health care equality, improving patient outcomes, and reducing hospital costs. EBP is a problem-solving tactic that offers the best evidence to inform medical and nursing practice so as to ensure the best patient outcomes. Applying EBP helps in achieving the Quadruple Aim. Firstly, it enhances the patients’ experiences by matching practices with the best patient experiences. Care delivery and decisions supported by EBP integrate the best available evidence to optimize personalized care delivery that meets the unique needs of each patient thereby improving the patient experiences. For instance, conducting hourly rounding on an inpatient improves the patient experience by ensuring that pressure ulcers are avoided while the emergent needs of the patient are met even as the patient feels valued (Loversidge & Zurmehly, 2019).

Secondly, EBP drives population healthy by identifying and addressing population preferences, values, needs and characteristics. For instance, if a population is identified as comprised of elderly adults in retirement who mainly suffer from chronic ailments such as high blood pressure and diabetes, then EBP can be applied to help in the preventive measures against the conditions. Such as, applying tele-monitoring to keep track of vitals and anticipate health concerns before they occur so that the members of the population are kept healthy. Applying EBP ensures that the population has access to tools that improve population health and drive care success (Loversidge & Zurmehly, 2019).

Thirdly, EBP helps to reduce costs by keeping the community healthy so that they require fewer hospitalizations, tests and doctors’ visits. It improves patients’ outcomes resulting in cost-effective care. In addition, EBP ensures that resources are used efficiently where they are needed and maximize returns. For instance, if a hospital is experiencing a shortage of nurses, then EBP can be applied to address the staffing shortage so that low level nurses take on routine tasks while high level nurses take on specialized tasks that only they can do (Schmidt & Brown, 2019).

Fourthly, EBP helps to improve the work life of healthcare providers. In ensuring the efficient assignment of resources to areas where they are most needed, EBP allows for care delivery to adopt tools that ease the pressure on medical personnel without compromising the quality of care they provide. This helps in reducing depression, stress and burnout among the providers, thus reducing staffing costs, improving care outcomes, and increasing patient satisfaction levels (Fawcett, 2017).

This is an organization that offers medical services and engages in health care research activities while managing a website that presents useful health information even as it markets its medical services. A review of its value statements reveals that the organization applies EBP. The mission statement reveals that the organization inspires hope and promotes health through integrating clinical practice, education and research, an indication that it applies EBP (Mayo Clinic, 2022).

In addition, this shows that the organization’s work is grounded on EBP as integrating clinical practice, education and research reveals that the best evidence is developed then applied in medical practice. The information presented in the organization’s website shows that this is an organization that focuses on providing ground-breaking high quality medical care. The organization engages in research activities through which it develops new evidence. Also, it provides education, an activity that makes it an authority on medical knowledge. Furthermore, it provides integrates medical practice that applies the evidence it develops, thus showing that it is always striving to provide the best possible medical care (Christenbery, 2017).

Healthcare organizations continually seek to optimize healthcare performance. For years, this approach was a three-pronged one known as the Triple Aim, with efforts focused on improved population health, enhanced patient experience, and lower healthcare costs.

More recently, this approach has evolved to a Quadruple Aim by including a focus on improving the work life of healthcare providers. Each of these measures are impacted by decisions made at the organizational level, and organizations have increasingly turned to EBP to inform and justify these decisions.

To Prepare:

• Read the articles by Sikka, Morath, & Leape (2015); Crabtree, Brennan, Davis, & Coyle (2016); and Kim et al. (2016) provided in the Resources.
• Reflect on how EBP might impact (or not impact) the Quadruple Aim in healthcare.
